Communications Associate
Public relations • Digital & social media • Client communications
The opportunity
Sabo PR is looking for a full-time, digital-first, creative communications professional who is a strong writer, curious researcher and thoughtful collaborator. This role is designed for someone with one to three years of professional communications experience who is ready for broad agency experience while contributing meaningful work for clients.
You will research trends and opportunities, write for a range of channels, help develop media outreach plans, support and manage media relations, create and publish social media content, engage online communities and work directly with clients to advance their objectives.
What you’ll do
- Research organizations, industries, topics, audiences, media outlets and trends for client needs and business development; verify details and translate insights into clear, accessible content.
- Write and edit media pitches, news releases, social media posts, website copy, articles, newsletters, and other communications in each client’s voice.
- Help develop and execute media outreach plans, build targeted media lists and coordinate responses to media inquiries.
- Monitor media coverage, online conversations, AI search results and social performance; contribute to accurate reports and recommendations.
- Co-create social media strategy, manage content calendars, write copy and design simple graphics.
- Monitor and manage social media communities by responding appropriately, elevating emerging issues and helping clients build constructive audience relationships.
- Participate in client meetings, keep projects moving and deliver work on time.
- Collaborate with Sabo PR colleagues, clients and outside partners while shifting comfortably among multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Support time-sensitive client communications, including work outside regular business hours when needed.
What you bring
- One to three years of professional experience in public relations, communications, social media, journalism, marketing or a related field.
- A proactive approach, growth and continuous learning mindset to work every day.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with close attention to grammar, accuracy and tone. A portfolio including factual, human interest and business-savvy writing samples will have an edge.
- A digital-first mindset with working knowledge of major online platforms, trends and emerging media.
- Sound judgment and the confidence to ask questions and check facts.
- Strong organization and project-management habits, including the ability to prioritize, pivot and meet deadlines across multiple projects.
- Ability to create on-brand visual content using tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Professionalism, discretion and care when handling confidential or sensitive information.
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Extra value
Experience with influencer marketing, social media management platforms or media-monitoring tools is a plus. An understanding of how AI-driven search, content and online conversations influence brand visibility, public perception and reputation.
How the role works
This position is based in Grand Rapids and is primarily in person, in our downtown office Monday-Thursday with remote Fridays and scheduling flexibility. Expect to spend some hours each week in the office of a client. Work will include projects for Sabo PR’s corporate, nonprofit, municipal and education clients.
Occasional evening or weekend work is necessary to meet client needs or deadlines and support events. We approach these moments as a team, with everyone willing to step up and no one expected to shoulder the burden alone. We actively support sustainable workloads through comp time, recharge time, a generous holiday schedule and flexibility for personal needs.
