The Children’s Healing Center turned to Sabo PR to help with a donor request to start a conversation around how to talk with families experiencing medical trauma due to a child having a life-threatening disease.
Our team ultimately came to the Center with the idea to create a booklet that would make it easy to start a better conversation with these families, becoming a resource for families who use the Center that could be easily shared with their friends and family. We brought together a focus group of six parents whose children had conditions ranging from severe asthma to kidney disease, as well as one parent who had lost her daughter.
Sabo PR wrote and designed the special guide titled “Have you thought about: What NOT to say to parents with medically complex kids,” featuring phrases to avoid and to use based on input from the parents. The booklet was met with great enthusiasm from families on social media, with several proclaiming it was exactly the tool they needed.

“This is really special and honest in a way that is so helpful to families walking through a medical journey. It’s hard to have these conversations in sensitive times (or at all), so creating a resource like this feels so incredibly supportive. Thank you, truly!”
“This is such a valuable resource! Please read & remember its wise words the next time someone you know has a child (or any family member) with a complex diagnosis. Many times, people have the best intentions, but words often sting. They did for us, all too often. Honestly, they still do at times. Please read & think before speaking. ❤️”
